.NET Framework 4 Beta 1 released

Aug 14, 2009 by Doina

Following the announcement of the first Beta version for the Microsoft development platform and tools, the new enhanced .NET Framework 4 Beta 1 is available for download from MSDN.

One of the exciting new features, though not sure to remain in the final release, is the Software Transactional Memory (STM). This feature provides several programming constructs that greatly simplify working with data from concurrent threads – one of the major stumbling blocks that prevented many software applications from being written to take advantage of the now omnipresent multi-core CPU’s.

The Parallel Extensions, included in the release, are another set of functionality meant to help applications fully use multi-threading without requiring significant development efforts.

In addition to this, .NET 4.0 Beta 1 comes with full support for three extra languages: IronPython, IronRuby and F# - the latter being Microsoft’s implementation of the OCaml programming language.

Some of the general improvements brought by the new .NET Framework 4 include enhancements to ASP.NET, new JavaScript UI templates and data binding capabilities for AJAX, plus several improvements to WPF, Windows Workflow (WF), and Windows Communication Foundation (WCF).

To name just a few, WPF has added support for Windows 7 multi-touch, ribbon controls, and for Surface SDK 2.0. There are also performance improvements and visual enhancements in text clarity, layout pixel snapping, localization and interoperability.

Windows Workflow can now allow developers to better host and interact with workflows, including and improved activity programming model, designer experience and many more.

Windows Communication Foundation includes new features such as support for WCF Workflow Services that enables workflow programs with messaging activities, correlation support, rich hosting capabilities and durable two-way communication. In addition to this, it comes with discovery, router service, simplified configuration and some other improvements to queuing, REST support, diagnostics and performance.
