Harness the Power of

MCP for Your

Projects

Hermes Agent is an open-source AI agent that runs on your own server or computer and remembers what it learns. Nous Research released it in February 2026 under the MIT license. It writes reusable skills from tasks it has already solved.

You talk to it from a terminal, a desktop app, or chat tools such as Slack and Telegram. It can search the web, run commands in a sandbox, and carry out scheduled jobs with nobody at the keyboard.

Where and how is MCP used in software development

Scheduled reports and briefings

You describe a job in plain language, such as a weekly build summary, and Hermes runs it on a schedule. Someone still needs to check that the numbers it reports are right.

A team assistant in chat

Connect it to Slack, Telegram, or email, and the team asks it questions where they already work. Decide up front which channels it may read, because it keeps what it learns in memory.

Research and documentation lookup

It searches the web and drives a browser, so it can read documentation and summarize options before a design decision. Treat its summaries as a starting point and check the sources.

Routine engineering chores

Inside a sandbox, it can run scripts and commands, such as dependency checks or build log reviews. Keep it away from production credentials.

Parallel work with subagents

Hermes can start isolated subagents, each with its own conversation and terminal, to handle separate tasks at the same time. More agents mean more model cost and more output for a person to review.

Backups and operational checks

Scheduled jobs can run backups and routine checks unattended. For anything your business depends on, we add monitoring that does not rely on the agent itself.

Reusable team procedures

When Hermes solves a task, it can save the steps as a skill and reuse them. Skills follow the open agentskills.io standard, so your developers can read, edit, and share them.

Private, local use

You can run Hermes on your own infrastructure, which keeps project data out of third-party tools. Prompts still go to the model provider you choose, unless you run an open-weight model yourself.

Main advantages OF using Hermes

Open source under the MIT license

Your developers can read, audit, and fork the code. The software itself has no license fee, but model providers and optional hosted services charge separately.

Runs on your own infrastructure

You choose where it runs, and its saved conversations, memories, and skills stay with you. Anything you send to a model provider leaves your environment.

Memory and skills that build up

Hermes keeps what it learns between sessions, so it needs less explaining over time. That memory can also hold wrong conclusions, so we review it on a regular schedule.

Your choice of model provider

It works with providers including Nous Portal, OpenRouter, OpenAI, and Anthropic, as well as custom endpoints. That lets you compare providers on cost and quality for your own tasks.

Where Hermes is not the right fit

The project is still moving fast

Hermes was released in February 2026, and its behavior changes between versions. We pin versions and test each update before it reaches your setup.

Private data, untrusted content, and outside actions

An agent that can read private data, handle content from outside, and act on other systems carries a known security risk. We design setups so it never holds all three without a person approving the action.

Processes that never change

If your steps are the same every time, a workflow tool such as n8n is cheaper to run and easier to audit. We build with both and tell you which one fits.

Decisions with real consequences

If an error could harm a person or breach a regulation, the agent should suggest and a person should decide. Agent output varies from run to run, so it should not be the last check.

Complementary technologies for Hermes

Docker

Hermes can run its commands in a Docker container instead of directly on the host machine. That keeps a mistake inside the container.

Large language model providers

The model does the reasoning, so its choice drives quality and cost. We help you test hosted models and open-weight models on your own tasks.

Slack, Telegram, and email

Hermes reaches people through these channels, so access to them needs the same care as access to any employee account. We set up which channels it can read and where it can post.

The agentskills.io standard

Skills written in this open format can be reviewed, versioned, and shared like any other code. We keep them in your repository, not only in the agent's memory.

Best practices when it comes to Hermes

Start with one task you can check

Pick a job with a clear right answer, such as a weekly report. Compare the agent's output with a person's for a few weeks before you widen the scope.

Run it in a container

Hermes can run commands directly on the host or in a sandbox such as Docker. Use the sandbox, so a bad command cannot reach your machine.

Keep private data and untrusted content apart

Do not let one agent read your private code and also process emails or web pages from strangers. Split those jobs across separate agents.

Review the skills and memory it writes

Hermes saves skills on its own. Read new ones before the team relies on them, and clear out memories that are wrong.

Keep a person approving outside actions

Sending a message, changing a ticket, or touching production should need a human yes. Loosen this only after the agent has earned it.

Back up its data and watch model costs

Back up the Hermes data directory, which holds its conversations, memories, and skills. Model usage is billed by the provider, so set a budget and review it monthly.
